Free Download: Edgar Gael Photo back

Price: $Free Download!.

Here’s another photo back from my personal collection. This one is from Edgar Gael’s photo studio. Gael was a British photographer in London from the mid-late 1800s. He had a handful of different photo back designs, but this one is my personal favorite. It’s from 1880 and is by far the most intricately illustrated of his collection.

If you’re interested in learning more about Edgar Gael, his competition, and other prominent photographers from the 1800, here is a great resource.

Extinct Typeface (c.1800) Brought Back from the Dead!

The typeface is “Roman Print Variously Shaded” from the 1800s. The guy behind the resurrection scanned it in at 1200dpi and has also added several variations of a handful of letters.

This makes me so happy…and also makes me feel extremely lazy. I always get close to doing this with my big vintage books, but never seem to get around to it..sigh. Starting a company is way too time consuming…

Barnum & Bailey

Interesting fact: Barnum and Bailey was bought out by the Ringling Brothers in 1907 but continued to be run as a separate circus act for 12 years until they finally merged the two into one massive Ringling Brothers Circus. John Ringling eventually sold the company in 1967 to the man who would, ten years later, sell it to Mattel. Mattel!

These are Public Domain images- meaning they’re free to use however you like (in your art, on your website, printed on circus enthusiast T-shirt, etc.).

To download the full size: Click the image to be taken to an annoying middle step (I can’t get rid of it!) where the image gets smaller, then click it again to be taken to the full size. OR, you can right click and select the “download” option.

Free Download: Scholten Photoback, Late 1800s

Price: $Free Download!.

This is another miniature photo back from my personal collection. I did a little snooping and found an online publication that had some information about the life of Mr. Charles A.W. Scholten. I love hearing about the stories attached to the bits of history that survive them. It’s a little sad though, reading how he had the odds against him, yet totally rocked out his life and did great things, only to end up being a small blip in history. I have one of the few surviving photo backs of his, and I’m glad it can now be something more than just a pretty piece of design.

Share A Brewsky With Your Kids! 1906

Is your child being a nuisance? Give them a beer! No other drink will make parenting easier- just get them a little tipsy and they’ll be a jolly good child, guaranteed! (Unless they’re a sloppy, grumpy drunk I suppose, then they may run off telling their friends what they really think of their toys..) Continue reading →
