1876 Vibrator Trade Card

You know I had to do it. I’ll let you know how big the spike in readership is..

So, I’ve rounded up a little more Gaslight design! I’m on a kick..above are a few trade cards from the 1800s worth a look.

Via one of my all time favorite resources, Sheaff-Ephemera. Their images aren’t large, but they have a massive resource and do a great job of categorizing their pieces and giving nice descriptions.

As far as vintage and antique vibrators of, uhm, another sort are concerned, the only one that I’ve seen whose design and packaging might be considered at all artful is the Vibroette, though some might defend the ads for Horse Exercise at Home: [A] and [B].

Vigor’s Horse-Action Saddler was actually sold both to men and to women, but note that one of the ills that it supposedly treated was “hysteria”. Now, in that era, “hysteria” was basically used for female genital vaso-congestion, something relieved (then and now) by orgasm.

(One early market for vibrators was actually doctors, who were essentially bring women to orgasm for a fee.)

Got something to say? Go for it!
