Mark Vanhoenacker over at Slate has a terrific article detailing the evolution of the airline baggage tag, with quips from sea and rail all the way up to modern day. Throughout the article he links to a variety of great image resources, including Slate’s own slideshow, a Flickr set on color-coded airline tags, and an aviation label collection.
Even aside from the great ephemera, the article is really interesting and talks about the design and engineering feats the modern day tags had to overcome–and how they overcome so well. Check it out.
